Discovering the real King’s Landing on the Dubrovnik Game Of Thrones tour!

After all, we had an amazing time on the Northern Ireland Game of Thrones tour, so it felt rude not to carry that trend on!!

Why take a tour?

Sure, you could search out each of these locations yourself, but you would surely miss many of them! Dubrovnik is a small place but it is easy to get lost, many of these locations were in tiny nooks and crannies you wouldn’t even know where there!! It is also great to be able to see on cards that the guide provides a comparison of how the locations looked in the show compared to real life.

This really makes a difference when it comes to visualising what exactly happened here! Our guide was also really knowledgeable about the show too, more than all of us fans for sure, this means that you really get the inside scoop on where you are and also quite a bit of behind-the-scenes gossip and titbits too!

King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdom awaits you…

Highlights:

The Red Keep

From the vantage point of Fort Lovrijenac, looking over to the impressive city walls of Dubrovnik you can see why they chose this magnificent location as the iconic Red Keep. The towers have the regal air to them that you would expect of the capital of the seven kingdoms and from up here you can easily identify which parts in the show are original and which were edited in.

It is also interesting to notice several of the features of the city itself, such a the famous bell tower, appearing in Kings Landing!

The Purple Wedding, where Joffrey died!

Now who didn’t cheer the moment that brat Joffrey finally bit the dust? We all knew it had come, but that iconic moment must be one of the most revered and remembered! Well in a rather unassuming park near the fort is where the deed took place! Gradac Park is the spot where this most grandiose wedding took place and of course, the place where poor old Joffrey was poisoned and died whilst eating his pigeon pie!

The harbour where little Finger and Sansa fled

Not only is this place absolutely stunning but it also hosted some amazing iconography from the show. The almost unnatural-looking rock that juts out at the end of this tiny harbour in one of the coves around the bay of Dubrovnik is instantly recognisable. In Kolorina harbour this tiny ship berth, surrounded by the clear emerald waters of the Adriatic, was the spot in which Littlefinger told her about his plots for the future and their journey back home.

Our Favourite Backpacks

Osprey Fairpoint/ Fairview

We’ve used the Osprey Fairpoint/ Fairview for all our backpacking adventures over the past 5 years and highly recommend them!

The main area of the pack opens like a suitcase, which is great for using packing cubes to keep everything organised and they even come with a detachable day pack!

Battle of Blackwater Bay and where Tyrion spoke to Varys about his plans/ Fort Bokar

Who can forget the iconic battle of Blackwater Bay, where Tyrion Lannister proved his might by defending King’s Landing against the approaching armies of Stannis Baratheon? See where the green wildfire ripped apart the attacking fleet in this season-defining episode and also the spot from which Tyrion discussed those tactics with Varys! We have to admit this was one of the coolest locations on the tour! Fortunately, they didn’t actually blow up the bay for the show!! haha!

Joffreys name Day lookout

Well, Joffrey sure had a memorable Name day and it took place in non-other than Fort Lovrijenac! Even smaller scenes were filmed here over the course of numerous seasons…they obviously couldn’t get enough of the stunning visa it provides! But Joffrey’s big day has to be the most well-known of those. It was from here that he sat and watched the tournament held in his honour and where Loras unhorsed Jaime!

The harbour where Myrcella is sent to Dorne

Ahh sweet princess Myrcella, the only child of Cersei and Jaime who actually appears to be nice! Unfortunately for her, she was to be shipped off to Dorne and married off for political reasons. Just when she appeared to be settling in nicely she met her end, again, for the benefit of political changes! It was here in the stunning harbour of Dubrovnik, surrounded by the imposing walls and the high fort that she was waved off, never to see her home again!

The Pile Gate

The famous main entrance to the stunning walled old town of Dubrovnik was used in several scenes in the show. From when Jaime returned to the king’s landing a defeated man…and with one less hand, alongside Brienne. To the scenes that depict Joffrey running through the streets of the capital whilst being pelted with rotten fruit and inciting a riot as the mob rebelled against the new king!

The Walk of Shame

Who could forget the walk of shame, as Cersi Lannister was stripped of her dignity and made to repent against her sins in public. I’m not quite sure what the locals would make of you recreating this naked walk through the middle of the city but at the time filming caused quite a stir in this Catholic town! Starting from one of Dubrovnik’s stunning churches (you can see why that might cause a problem) you can follow in the footsteps of Cersei around the streets of Old Town! Just maybe keep your clothes on!

Overall!

There were so many other locations that we forgot to mention or simply don’t have time. We were impressed at the time with how many places we saw back in Northern Ireland but over here in Dubrovnik, the locations are tenfold…it would be impossible to visit them all! Around every corner of the city is another place in which something big or small was filmed, Dubrovnik truly has become King’s Landing with filming almost taking over the city in the Autumn months!

The media industry here is really taking off too and providing the city with another means of income beyond just simply tourism. The city officials even plan on opening studios nearby and there are plans for both Star Wars and James Bond to be filmed here in the future!
