Flight of The Gibbon, Chiang Mai [UPDATED FOR 2024]

The first of its kind in the dense jungle of Chiang Mai

There are many imitation zip line and high rope courses in Chiang Mai, sifting through the many leaflets that litter the tourist shops and hostels here can make you dizzy even before you’ve stepped on a 100ft high platform! However Flight of The Gibbon was the first of its kind in Chiang Mai, the most safety conscious and the most developed. The obvious choice is to go with the tried and tested rather than the cheap imitations, plus, as I will mention later, they also do some amazing conservation work in the area!

Getting a full on safety briefing before we embark on this journey

Despite being well versed in all things rope technique, abseiling devices and harnesses being experienced climbers it is still important to have a full safety briefing as you never know when something might be a little different, especially in a different country. At Flight of the Gibbon they take safety seriously and ensure each and every person is comfortable and confident before you head up to the main course. However if you did have any worries then you needn’t have, instead of clipping and unclipping yourself like we did on our Go Ape zipline adventure back home you always have 2  highly trained guides with you to ensure everything is done correctly. We do love to do the ropes ourselves if we are honest but it actually made for a more fun day not having to worry about any of that and just being able to enjoy the ziplines!

Heading high into the roof of the jungle for the adventure of a lifetime!

Now it was time to ascend high into the roof of the rain forest, at times well over 100ft from the lush tropical world below, just like those wonderful Gibbons! Climbing up we could feel our excitement levels building, anything that is high and fast and we are all over it! But what also struck us was the sheer beauty of seeing the jungle from the Gibbons eye view, a vantage point many never get to take it in from!

Thankfully our group was a brave one and no one seemed really all to bothered by the height we all now found ourselves at, teetering on the edge of a wooden platform and clipped in by our harnesses! It was time for the most amazing tree top adventure to begin!

Flying at speed down ziplines almost a 1km long each!

Now it was time for the adventure, it was straight in with no warming up or easing in, they are all about action here! Flying down the first few set of ziplines we got a taste of what we would be in for over the next 2.5 hours as we would traverse our way through the jungle at its highest and most beautiful points!

One of the highlights of the course, that includes several Km of ziplines was Asia’s single longest line at 800m, that is almost a Km in itself!! Flying at speed high through the dense foliage you suddenly find yourself floating high above the tree tops below in complete open space and this lush landscape passes before your eyes. It certainly gets the heart beat racing and the adrenaline pumping but more so you suddenly forget just how high you are when you catch sight of the jaw dropping surroundings you find yourself in!

Then of course is the superman jump, it’s one thing to sit back in your harness and zip over the trees, but it is another to leap off a platform in blind hope that the rope will catch you! But leap off we did and in doing so got the biggest rush of the day as we came crashing into the cargo net at the other end of the swing!

Other highlights also include the many abseils and skybridges which allow you to see the tree tops at yet another amazing angle!

Seeing the beautiful Gibbons this project protects

Part way through the adventure and it is time for a change of pace. Flight of the Gibbon isn’t just a name made up for fun but has a real meaning for this amazing place. Back when the company was founded in 2007 the owners stumbled across a gibbon trapped in a cage deep in the jungle and left to die. These endangered creatures had suffered a heart breaking fate as their environments were hacked down and many were poached in the process.

The guys here decided to do something about this and set up this Eco tourism centre for people to come and have a great time in this now protected jungle whilst pumping the profits into conservation programs for the Gibbons. Luckily we were able to see a family of these cheeky and adorable creatures at feeding time as we took a break from attempting to imitate their graceful transition through the tree tops (Note: We failed on the graceful part!) It was simply amazing to see them thriving here and also so entertaining too!
