A family run hostel that makes you feel right at home

By far one of the best hostels we have stayed in around the world are the ones run by families, whether they be in converted homes or just in very local areas of a city they always offer so much more and often feel more like AirBnB or couchsurfing. Shwe Yo Vintage hostel is run by a local family in the Chinatown area of the city, a lively quarter with a strong cultural heritage which they are proud to be part of.

The owners welcome you into their home and often just sit around in the large communal area chatting, playing card games and giving out priceless local knowledge. They really take the time out to get to know each one of their guests, and the kids also love to talk football too!

Design and function that make this a hostel to remember

As we mentioned in the into, the accomodation situation in Myanmar is a tricky one, at the lower end everything seems expensive and yet at the same time you can stay in the higher end properties for much less than you would pay elsewhere. However unless you are after a great budget holiday in luxury hotels then it can be somewhat off putting.

However the guys at Shwe Yo really seem to understand this predicament and strive to offer the cheapest prices they can whilst at the same time creating an environment that feels worth the extra money compared with what you might pay in say Thailand or Vietnam.

The whole hostel has been designed with both style and function in mind. The beds are comfortable and the rooms spacious and offer good quality lockers (something very important to us), reading lights and plugs by each bed and unique local artwork against the modern concrete design. It all combines to create a lovely, clean and contemporary boutique feel which added to the family atmosphere offers everything you could want in a hostel. They also offer great private rooms too for those looking for the social vibes of a hostel but that prefer a little more privacy, a great compromise!

Homecooked meals and friendly chats: A perfect place to stay in Yangon on a budget

Probably our favourite aspect of the hostel was the food here. Each morning they prepare something different and always local for breakfast, from noodles one morning to soup the next, you never quite know what to expect but it is always amazing. They also cook up a family lunch everyday, again a set local meal lovingly prepared, always tasty and costing only £1!! They also have other food on offer throughout the day as well as freshly made shakes for great prices. They are also great if you are vegetarian too and will cook you up something too!

Eating together is a great way to bring people together. In their downstairs communal dining and chill out area breakfast and lunch times really allow people to break the ice and get talking. Even better the family usually join their guests to eat and chat, drink a beer at night and really get to know everyone.

Have you ever stayed in such a trendy but homely hostel?
