Steel House Copenhagen: The Luxury Hostel That is Going to Blow Your Mind and Change Perceptions! [UPDATED FOR 2024]

With almost 2 years on the road under our belt backpacking around Eastern Europe, China, South East Asia, Australia and now Scandinavia we’ve stayed in some amazing hostels (and some not to wonderful ones, but that’s another story!) So when we say a hostel blew our minds, we well and truly mean it! We know when we even mention to word “hostel” to many other travellers they recoil in horror and say never! But one of our aims through our travels is to break down misconceptions both in the countries we visit but also the way we travel too. We LOVE hostels and would honestly never change staying in them to hotels. Get the right hostel and you have such a richer and more engaging travel experience, you can also get so much more than just your bog standard budget hotel for the same price too. If super modern room, swimming pools, games room, a cinema, full kitchen and even a gym sound like your kind of accommodation… then maybe you’re a hostel person after all! Here is the incredible Steel House, Copenhagen, Denmark!

One of the largest and most impressive hostels in the world

Located in the heart of the hip and happening Vesterbro area of Copenhagen the hostel is in the perfect spot to explore this wonderful city from. It’s urban chic design really combines the old and the new, an accurate representation for Copenhagen itself. With space for over 1000 guests at any one time Steel House has to be one of the largest and most unique hostels we have ever come across.

This huge space has been designed perfectly down to the smallest detail and despite the huge number of guests catered for you really do feel catered for as an individual. For example, each room has the signature New Yorker style pod beds, some private, some with 4-6 beds in each room. Every bed in the entire place has had a custom made specialised mattress made to not only fit the unique shape of the beds but to also provide the most comfortable sleep possible!

A luxury hostel where everything you could think of is covered!

It’s not everyday that you check into a hostel that has a dedicated games room, a cinema and tv room, full kitchen facilities and even a gym, swimming pool, bike rental service and a dedicated and secure luggage storage area. We were blown away by the sheer level of service offered by a hostel, this truly makes Steel House a pioneer in what we see as the development of hostels in the future. Being so far ahead of anything else we have experienced in terms of a hostel it really does exemplify just why we need to look at hostels as very different types of accommodation as some might expect.

Here the rooms are magnificently laid out, comfortable, well designed and offer just the right balance of privacy and socialisation. The facilities within the hostel go above and beyond many available at top end hotels and for a fraction of the price and in a much more laid back environment.

A hostel to rest, chill, socialise and even work out in!

Hostels have often been seen as the preserve of the backpacker, but now the new generation of hostel is proving that it can cater for a variety of travellers. Providing private rooms, or availability to book out entire dorms as well as the more conventional social hostel experience, this means that from backpackers to business travellers, families to couples, everyone can enjoy this wonderful hostel.

The inclusion of a bar, which also does food, alongside a fully functioning kitchen (which other hostel has an oven!!) and the close proximity to Copenhagen’s wonderful restaurants and cafes again shows how much flexibility the hostel provides.

Working out or working in, the gym, high speed internet and TV/ games rooms mean those on the road long term or travelling for work can look after themselves, their work and find space to unwind too. Whilst those on a short trip can enjoy plenty of space to relax and rejuvenate after a long day exploring this beautiful city, or post a few selfies to facebook using the free computers and tablets!

Friendly staff, local knowledge and bike rental to explore Copenhagen!

Steel House also managed to balance well being a large hostel with personal service. To manage the numbers checking in you can either do it on the dedicated tablets in the reception, or in person if you prefer. The staff are all knowledgable about the local area and great to ask any questions or queries you might have.

Not only this but the hostel also has several notice boards letting you know of walking tours and events both in the city and the hostel. It’s a really great way to socialise and see more of the city. The bike rental service too really allows you to see Copenhagen through the eyes of a local!
